Wars and Rumors of Wars

By: Belladonna

As the world reflects on the 6th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I am reminded that "We are living in the prophesied time “when peace shall be taken from the earth” (D&C 1:35), when “all things shall be in commotion” and “men’s hearts shall fail them” (D&C 88:91). There are many temporal causes of commotion, including wars and natural disasters, but an even greater cause of current “commotion” is spiritual.,,We are surrounded by challenges on all sides (see 2 Cor. 4:8–9)." (Oaks 2004.)

Thre is no question that we are living in perilous times.  One of the concerns that I've had for a long time is the degree to which all those second coming of Christ prophecies may contribute to apathy or fatalism.  If we believe that wars and horrible events in the last days are inevitable, do we become less likely to stand up to oppose them?

Albert Einstein said "You cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war."  He also said "Peace cannot be kept by force.  It can only be kept by understanding."

In what ways does being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints influence your attitudes and actions toward the current military conflict this nation is embroiled in?   If you were in charge of the world, what changes would you make?

I happen to think we need to be doing what we are. I know many disagree. When I read the events of 3rd Nephi and those in Mormon I see exactly what is going on in this world today. The one problem I have is others thinking because I have this view that I am a warmonger. Actually, I believe that peace is not the absence of war. We need to be able to fight for our freedom and the freedom of others. What really, really bothers me are those that are swayed by popular opinion. I have no problem with those that don't believe in war no matter what, or those that see the need. It is when the opinion changes over night because of the pressure of others for no other reason than to tear down the confidence of our leaders really bothers me.
Captian Moroni was a man that believed the necessity of war. I do how even believe that he wishes there could have been other options. I suppose I am in that camp. As a lay person, with no comprehension of military strategy or mind, I honestly want our leaders to do what is right and best. I have to admit I do not know what that will be at times.
I would love a world of peace, but unfortunately that is not to be until the Saviour comes again. There are too many people out there that do not want peace, that want to destroy the life that we hold dear, including our faith in Jesus Christ. That tells me that peace will be a very, very long time in coming.
